Nampa is located in Canyon County, west of Boise, along I-84 in the Treasure Valley.
Colonel W.H. Dewey brought his fortune to Nampa in the 1890s. At that time it was just a small town, but Dewey attracted railroads and built the Dewey Palace Hotel.
Today Nampa, population 67,000, is a central location from which to explore southwestern Idaho's natural wonders and historic sites. A railroad display at Lakeside Park features Union Pacific No. 616, a 2-8-0 locomotive. Other attractions include Canyon County Historical Museum, a former train depot; Swiss Village Cheese, whose facilities, cafe, gift shop and outlet store are open all week long; and Bogus Basin, ideal terrain for skiing and snowboarding. Nampa is home to Northwest Nazarene University, a four-year Christian liberal arts college.
The area's four-season climate produces a low average temperature of 20.2 degrees in January and a high of 92.0 degrees in July.
Nampa is part of the Boise, Idaho metro area.
