The town became known affectionately as "Paradise Valley", following settlement in 1871. The first store was opened on today's Main Street in 1875. Arrival of the railroad in 1885 spurred Moscow's growth. Incorporation followed in 1887.
Today Moscow, population 21,500 (est. 1998) is the agricultural hub of the Palouse, a rich wheat-growing area. It is also known as the Pea and Lentil Capital of the Nation. The lowest average minimum daily temperature here is 24.0 degrees and the highest is 84.3 degrees. The city is the home of the University of Idaho, which is the largest employer. Points of interest include the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, held in February on the campus, and the Appaloosa Horse Museum and National Registry.
