Augusta

Augusta is located in Richmond County and it is the county seat. The city is situated on the Savannah River on the state line with South Carolina in the Historic South Region of the state.

Augusta's population is approximately 196,510. It is Georgia's second oldest and second largest city. The area enjoys a warm climate. Its mean annual precipitation is 44.6 inches and mean annual snowfall is 1.4 inches.

Founded in 1736 as an Indian trading post, Augusta was named after the Princess of Wales. The city also was a colonial military outpost and a Revolutionary War battle site. It was Georgia's tobacco trading hub in the 1700s, and was the state capital from 1786 to 1795.

Today, Augusta boasts five historic districts reflecting diverse architecture and is the home of six colleges.

Augusta's industrial base includes production of medical products, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and textiles, among others. It is home to The Masters golf tournament.

Augusta is part of the Augusta-Aiken, Georgia-South Carolina metro area.
