Kent Region

Part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, this region seldom rises more than 80 feet above sea level. Its eastern edge fronts on the head of Delaware Bay. Delaware lies to the west and south. Verdant farmland comprises much of inland Kent County. Delaware's capital city of Dover is its major urban area.

The Delaware The Green in Dover is a throwback to the 18th Century with its historic chambers and a geometrical staircase. Also at the Green, Delaware assembled a Continental regiment, cheered to the reading of the Declaration of Independence and voted to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Aviation history is preserved in the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base. Epoch-making aircraft rest here, including a B-17 Flying Fortress and P-51 Mustang. Local Amish and Mennonite residents contribute home-made foodstuffs at Spence's Bazaar, an auction and flea market mecca.

Frederica is home to Barratt's Chapel and Museum, the oldest existing Methodist Church in the country. Separation of Methodism from the Church of England took place here in 1784. Sportsfishing is popular in the Bay, and Donovan's Dock charters in Frederica makes it possible.

Harrington hosts the Delaware State Fairgrounds, a 10-day affair held in July. Some 250,000 fair-goers enjoy this event each year.

The Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge at Smyrna consists of 15,978 acres, a generous wayside for waterfowl and other migratory birds. Visitors may tour by car or hike trails to observation decks.
