Patriot Nathan Hale Homestead, a farmhouse in Coventry with memorabilia and original furnishings, is in the Quiet Corner area. Antiques dealers, taster-friendly wineries, scenic walks and delights for the green thumb set are in this area as well. Prudence Crandall's school for young African-American women, founded in 1833, was a pivotal factor in Connecticut's abolitionist movement. The Prudence Crandall Museum, housed in the former school, is in Canterbury. Featuring European and American items, the Antiques Marketplace in Putnam accommodates more than 300 dealers at an indoor venue. Bird-watchers will appreciate the Connecticut Audubon Bafflin Sanctuary at Pomfret Center, whose managed 650 acres provide a home for scarce grassland birds.
