Hartford is located in Hartford County and is the county seat. It is situated just northeast of New Britain between East Hartford and Glastonbury, along Interstate 91 on the banks of the Connecticut River.

Hartford is the capital city of Connecticut and the largest city in the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 131,523, a decrease of 8,216 since 1990.
