Chester is located in Middlesex County, between Haddam and Deep River on Highway 9.

The community was named after Cherster, England. It was a 17th Century mill town, which also has a ferry that was made in 1769 and is still operating today taking people across the Connecticut River.

Originally known as Pattaconk Quarter, Chester was settled in 1692. Many mills sprang up as the settlers established permanent homes and Chester became the Fourth Parish of Saybrook. By 1836, it became an independent town.
