Cheshire is located in New Haven County north of New Haven between Waterbury and Wallingford along Highway 10 near Sleeping Giant State Park.

Community is named after a county in England. Cheshire was once a copper-mining center.

Cheshire was believed to be settled between 1690 and 1695. The town would be incorporated in 1780.

Local attractions include: Sleeping Giant State Park, Broad Brook Reservoir, Naugatuck State Forest, Naugatuck Trail, Long Meadow Pond, and Southford Falls State Park.
