Creede

A relative latecomer to Colorado's roster of bonanza towns -- the first silver lode was uncovered here in 1890 --- Creede remained the only silver camp in production during the silver panic of 1893 because its ore was of particularly high quality. Today, a tour of an underground silver mine and museum is available.

The nearby San Juan Mountains and Rio Grande National Forest provide recreational opportunities throughout the year. Literature describing a 17-mile driving tour of the local mining district is available at the Chamber of Commerce.

Creede has been named one of the "best small art towns in America," and is home to the famous Creede Reperatory Theatre, featuring a wide repertoire of plays in the summer months.

Creede is located northeast of Durango, on Hwy 149.
