San Mateo

The first inhabitants of what is now the City of San Mateo were members a triblet of the Ohlone Indians (called Coastanoans by Spanish explorers).

A residential suburb of San Francisco, San Mateo is on the San Francisco Peninsula south of San Francisco and the San Francisco International Airport. San Mateo is connected to communities and cities north and south by two freeways, Highway 101 and Interstate 280, and via the commuter train, CALTRAIN. San Mateo is connected to the east side of San Francisco Bay by the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, one of the longest highway bridges in the country.

San Mateo is part of the San Francisco, California metro area.
