Glen Ellen

The beautiful rural community of Glen Ellen is located in Sonoma County in Northern California. It is an unincorporated area in the northern half of the Sonoma County, also known as the Valley of the Moon and located north west of Napa on Highway 12. Glen Ellen is part of the Santa Rosa, California metro area.

The Valley of the moon was discovered and settled in the mid-19th century. Following the major thrust of the California Gold Rush, prospectors and settlers spread throughout northern California creating new communities at crossroads, river crossings, watering holes and along Indian trails.

The Wells Fargo Stage Line ran along the valley floor from Napa to Santa Rosa. One of the earliest businesses in Glen Ellen was a Blacksmith and livery stable started by a member of the Howell family, early settlers for whom Howell Mountain is named.
