Coronado

Coronado is across San Diego bay from San Diego and is joined to the mainland by a long, narrow sandbar called the Silver Strand and also by the famous Coronado Bridge. The famous Hotel Del Coronado, built in 1888 is located in the city near the North Island Naval Air Station. Coronado has 28 miles of beaches. There are also 18 parks, golf courses and much more.

The population of Coronado is approximately 29,229 (2000). The approximate number of families is 9,145 (1990).

The history of Coronado begins in the early seventeenth century when the Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino caught sight of a group of islands seventeen miles off the coast of southern California and named them Las Yslas Coronadas. These men surveyed the territories now known as San Diego and Coronado yet failed to settle in the area. For almost 200 years the peninsula remained bare. A new owner created the Coronado Beach Company on April 7, 1886 and construction began on the Hotel Del Coronado.
