Lake Cowichan is located 17 miles east of the junction of Highway 18 and Highway 1 (The Transcanada Highway). The community, with a population of about 2,200 lies at the eastern end of Cowichan Lake, one of Vancouver Island's largest lakes. Running north along the lake are paved roads to the logging community of Youbou, and south to Masachie Lake and Honeymoon Bay, home of a wildflower reserve. The lake circuit is completed with logging roads through the forest to the West Coast communities of Port Renfrew and Bamfield. Along the road to Youbou is the Teleglobe Canada Satellite Earth Station, open from mid-June to early September.
