Delta Region

The Mississippi River created the Delta and deposited rich soil that would eventually make cotton king. Today, soybeans and rice are grown as well. The region boasts byways, bayous, lakes and remains of old-growth bottomland forests.

Here Crowley's Ridge National Scenic Byway winds along treed, rolling hills from the Missouri border to Helena, a Mississippi port. Delta Cultural Center houses the story of the Delta environs and culture, including gospel and blues music. The Stuttgart Agricultural Museum explains how Arkansas's Grand Prairie was transformed by German settlers into one of the country's premier rice-growing regions. Louisiana Purchase State Park contains the starting point for the 1803 surveys of what is known as "the greatest real estate deal in history."

The region also is home to several wildlife refuges.
