Gustavus

Gustavus is located in Yakutat Borough. This town is the gateway to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and is located at the mouth of the Salmon River on the north shore of Icy Passage, 48 miles northwest of Juneau. The town is surrounded by mountains on three sides.

Gustavus began as an agricultural homestead in 1914. It was once known as Strawberry Point due to the abundant wild strawberries in the area. The current name was derived from Point Gustavus, which lies southwest of town.

The area has a number of beaches, level farmland and forests. Fishing and tourism are the main industries. For visitor information, contact the Gustavus Visitors Assoc.
