Mining activity just north of Delta Junction, as well as the Chisana Gold Strike in 1913, brought many prospectors and other travelers through the area. It was once known as Buffalo Center, for the American bison that were transplanted here in the 1920s. The 90,000 acre Delta Junction State Bison Range was created in 1979 to attract the bison to managed habitat, away from nearby agricultural lands.

Construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in the 1970s brought a dramatic upswing to the population and economy of Delta Junction. The area is important for major barley export.
